3 Reasons You Should Be Concerned About the Quality of Your Drinking Water
There are a lot of things that we take for granted in our world, and one of them is water. Anyone who has traveled to a foreign country and who has sipped at the water even when they weren’t supposed to knows what it’s like to have to deal with the aftereffects of this type of foolhardy decision. We all tend to take the water in our own homes for granted as well, and it’s important that you get healthy water into you on a regular basis. In fact doctors estimate that a healthy male should drink 13 glasses of water a day, and that to stay healthy, a woman should drink 9 glasses of water a day.
How healthy is your drinking water, really? It honestly doesn’t matter whether you live in the city or in the country, most people simply assume that the water that they’re drinking is safe, when in reality it may not be. How often do you turn on the tap every day? We wash dishes in our water, do our laundry, and of course use it to drink and in our drinks, but did you know that not all of the drinking water in our own country is safe?
Bad Water
The truth of the matter is that even though we are drinking water that is supposed to be safe and that is supposed to be completely filtered, the water that we’re drinking isn’t necessarily as safe as we are led to believe that it is. But water is one of the most naturally occurring elements in the world. It falls from the sky and we have vast reserves of it in the form of lakes and streams, so what about it could be unhealthy? Turns out that there are a number of things that can make water unsafe to drink and there are many reasons why you should be concerned about the safety of your drinking water.
1. One of the biggest reasons you should fear for your drinking water is due to chlorine. Chlorine is used by water treatment facilities in order to make the water clean, as it is a very strong disinfectant. Anyone who has gone to a public pool knows exactly what chlorinated water smells like. The truth is, however, that while these treatment facilities are supposed to get the chlorine completely out of your water, they often do not, which means that trace amounts of chlorine may be in your drinking water. Would it surprise you to know that chlorine has been linked to asthma as well as to breast, colon, and urinary cancers? This definitely makes chlorinated water, and possibly your drinking water, unsafe.
2. Microorganisms and Bacteria – Another thing that you should know about your drinking water is that it likely has some bacteria or microorganisms in it, like cryptosporidium or giardia. These little annoyances are actually immune to chlorine and can lead to wide outbreaks of gastrointestinal diseases.
3. Lead – Everyone knows that lead in a house is not a good thing, especially for young children, but lead can also be in your drinking water. Municipal facilities may accidentally release lead into drinking water due to problems within the plant, and your own pipes may be releasing lead into your drinking water even if you have your own well.
There are a number of things to be concerned about when it comes to drinking water, which is why you should never take your water for granted. There are many test kits that you can purchase which can help you to determine how safe your water is to drink and a number of options for getting your water thoroughly safe before drinking it as well.
