Love It A Lot – Commercial Dehydrator Review
The base is just a plastic drip pan that cleans up in seconds. We received this as a gift but have already used it many times.
The dehydrator is easy to use and clean. Considering the price of ‘sun-dried’ tomatoes, I expect this to pay back before the growing season ends. I would highly recommend this unit. Great for drying fruits, vegetables, meats and even canned pastas like Spaghettios. However, I felt it was necessary to turn the food over on the trays and switch the top and bottom trays just once mid-way through because the top tray was drying just a bit faster than the bottom tray. The unit runs quietly, giving off a low, steady hum that is much quieter than my microwave or a window fan. This is my first dehydrator. It has been really easy to learn.
So far I’ve used it to make both beef and venison jerky and both have been delicious. This is a fairly large appliance and if you are counter space challenged you won’t want to leave it out all the time.
I was researching dehydrators to make my own jerky and food for backpacking and hiking. The one that came back as the ‘most bang for the buck’ was this one. For the cost of one-way shipping, NESCO replaced the defective item. We are happy that NESCO stood behind its product. The unit performed flawlessly. We were able to dehydrate everything in less time than expected.
Otherwise, the trays can get caught on the prongs and if stuck, may break when trying to remove them. Typically, I soak the trays in very hot water and dish detergent for 24 hours and then wash them by hand using a sponge and a vegetable brush.
It is a bit noisy, but tolerable. Extra bonus, it includes a pretty handy food manual with tips and varied recipes, including some for dog treats! When I call I get the same nice lady and I ask when I will get my replacement. On Monday of last week it was “in the distribution center”. But I used the spice & cure packs that came with the dehydrator and in about 5 1/2 hours, the jerky was done, and it was excellent! I made one-pound batches, and they just disappeared!
This is the hardest way of doing it by FAR because evenness of the cuts is very important for drying purposes. You want to make sure you cook the meat all the way through, and thick areas can cause big problems. The dehydrator is light weight, easy to clean and very quiet to run. The instructions and simple recipes make it an easy way to make healthy treats not only for the dogs but for humans too.
It does take about 5 hours to make the jerky, and we’ll flip them every so often and soak up the grease, so you definitely have to keep an eye on it while it is going. furniture ottoman.
