I only rotate trays once during drying, if at all. It doesn’t have an on/off switch or timer.
This cheap little machine is amazing. Don’t worry about the lack of a timer. I highly recommend it for the money. I would suggest getting extra trays right from the beginning. Because drying times vary, I don’t feel having a timer would have been helpful. The heater/fan unit feels sturdy, and the trays are lightweight but sturdy too. I use it 2-3 times a week. All I make is beef jerky.
Remember that any replacement part is not warrantied for any additional time after the initial 1 year. If your dehydrator breaks after 11 months and they fix it, and then it breaks again after another 5 weeks, you are out of luck. I have made several batches of jerky. One thing you should take note of – the trays ARE dishwasher safe, but only if you turn off the heated drying cycle of your dishwasher! Otherwise the heat from the drying cycle will deform and not fit together properly anymore. Haven’t tried ground beef jerky. And the directions for doing that are again a bit vague, but it’s not difficult, and the results are fantastic.
I would have liked to see a few more recipes in the book but I can find them online if need be. All in all-we really like it! It has no on/off switch. Minor to me because I have mine plugged into a timer. It’s a smart design to place the fan on top lid as the juice came out from meat or fruit won’t make the fan dirty. The drying racks are dishwasher safe and fit into our dishwasher quite easily for easy cleaning.
It works very fast and is easy to clean. I soak in the sink in soapy water and clean with a sponge.
Then it occurred to me to plug the dehydrator into my Kill-a-watt and check actual power usage. To my surprise over the next 24 hour period it used 4.28 kW of electricity.
I love the dried fruit and jerky – it is better than anything store bought and a lot healthier without all of the preservatives. I would recommend this product to anyone wanting a dehydrator for their personal use.
