Starting an Event Catering Business – Ten Steps to Success

If you are searching for a small business opportunity in a growing industry and you also have a love for food and entertaining then why not start planning your own catering company.

In this article we set out 10 steps that you can follow to start servicing clients within a few short months.

1) Initial Preparation – Find out as much as possible about the catering business and how to run a successful catering business. Try to also learn about business management and marketing. Attending a course on business related topics is one excellent way to ensure that you are ready. Research the industry in your city or region. Try to learn more about what the established caterers are doing, how large your local market is and what types of events seem to be the most promising. Talk to people who have used caterers before to try and get a better understanding of your future customers.

2) Experience – While most states don’t require you to have any experience or qualifications to enter the catering business, if you have had experience working in the food and hospitality industries (or even with another catering firm) you will have an immediate advantage.

3) Local Health Authority Regulations and Paperwork – As a catering business owner you will be subject to the rules and regulations set out by local health authorities. Ensure that you fully understand them and give thought to how you will comply with them.

4) Where to Prepare Food for Events? – Will you operate out of the kitchen in your home, rent commercial kitchen space ,operate out of a restaurant kitchen after hours or only accept on-site jobs that let you use a kitchen at the place where the event will be held?

5) Call suitable insurance providers to get an idea of the policies that an event catering operator should have to provide cover in case of property damage or liability.

6) Planning a Menu – Study current food trends, look at the menu offerings of other catering firms and begin to formulate a variety of menus for all occasions that you can sell to prospects.

7) Make sure that you can handle the stress of catering for an event by having a trial run. Invite some friends or family members to come to your home for a fully catered dinner party so that you can try out dishes on them and get their feedback.
8) Think about a Name – Think about suitable names for your new catering business and a branding strategy in general.

9) Start Up Funding – It is important that you know exactly how much you will need in the way of start up financing so you should carefully list down all of your expected start up costs.

10) Once you have given serious thought to the nine factors above you can then proceed to prepare a business plan. A well researched plan will help you to organize your research findings and prove to yourself that your idea is viable. You will then have a blueprint to follow and help you to set and reach goals.

If you follow the above ten steps before proceeding to start your event catering business you will be giving yourself the best possible chance of finding success.
