Appliances: Out With The Old, In With The New

Thanks to the nationwide “cash for appliances” program, you may immediately qualify for a rebate on the most energy hungry of these appliances by choosing one that is rated as an Energy Star appliance. Following the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, $300 million worth of federal funds were allotted to this program that is regulated differently in each state.

If you want to see what appliances qualify and for how much rebate before you go storming any appliance store, all you need to do is search the information from your state online. The size of the rebate may be a fixed amount of approximately $50 to $200 per appliance as projected by the Department of Energy or a percentage of the cost.

Several states won’t be initiating the program until later in the year. April 22 is the date when it will be initiated in the state of Oklahoma, which has decided to restrict the rebates to one per appliance and two per household. The state is also requiring that the old appliances be removed and properly disposed of, which is not a requirement nationwide. In several states, like Minnesota for instance, this program was initiated earlier this year and the funds allocated for it have already been exhausted.

Don’t let the availability of rebate funding determine whether this is the right change for your kitchen, however. Even if you don’t get a rebate, new appliances can repay you in other ways.

New Energy Star appliances will save you money on a monthly basis as your electricity bills will be significantly lower, and they will make your kitchen look a lot better than before. Refrigerators, for example, are one of the biggest consumers of electricity that we own, behind heating and air, and a new model can lower your monthly bill.

In some states the rebate program may be restricted to certain items, like refrigerators or washers, but even if that is also the case with your state, you shouldn’t refrain from paying the extra $600 for a new stove that will definitely improve the look of your kitchen. The change cannot only be cheaper than new cabinets, walls or floors, but is also one that is quick and painless. An all-inclusive renovation of your kitchen can take weeks of constant dust-inhaling and mess-cleaning, plus finding a good contractor will give you a lot of headaches, whereas a simple appliance replacement saves you from all that and achieves quite the same effect: a fresh-looking kitchen.
