Here’s A Short Instruction Of How To Install Your Own Underfloor Heating System

Underfloor heating has been around since the days of the Romans who first came up with the convenient type of heating to keep their homes warm. You will discover that when you are considering doing this type of installation for your own home that there are different types and you need to make sure that the one you choose for your home is a system that is simple in design otherwise you will need to have a professional install it for you.

Before you go out and buy your system you will make sure that you know the exact place for installation. After you do that you need to make sure that you measure the areas that the installation will be going. Once you have the proper measurements and you have removed the floor tiling, you can go out and purchase the mats, a mix for grout and thinset mortar mix. You will also need to make sure that you have masking tape, scissors, measuring tape, wire cover molding which is plastic, trowel, bucket, mortar paddle, dust mask, safety glasses and a marking pen on hand.

Before you install the heating mats for your underfloor heating you need to find a good location for the thermostat. Make sure that it is placed about four or five feet up away from the floor. Close to a light switch is always a good place to put a thermostat.

After that is done you will need to take the mats and lay them out where you will want them to be and take your pen and mark any spots on the floor where cuts will need to be made for the mats to fit properly. When this is done lay down your power cable and put it as close to your thermostat as you can get it.

After you think the layout is how you want it you can make the cuts on the mat. Do this carefully and do not cut through any of the wires. Take the tape that is supplied with your kit and attach all of the mats to your subflooring. Make sure to tape up all of wires that are loose as well.

If your kit happens to come with a temperature sensor then this is when you would take it and lay it under one of the mats and make sure it is securely taped. The wires for the sensor need to be bundled along with your heating wires.

Now you will measure the wire cover molding and cut them so that they can reach the area in which you put the thermostat. Now bundle all of the heating wires and floor sensor wire and put them inside of the molding. Next you will snap the cover for the molding closed. Take off the seal of the double sided tape on the molding and press onto the wall. If you have done this correctly the bundle of heating wire should be coming out the top of the cover molding.

You should now take the instructions that come with the heating mat and follow them closely when you begin to attach all of the wires to the thermostat. After you have done this correctly you are ready to move onto the next step and that is mixing the thinset mortar. Take a bucket and fill it with water one quarter the way and slowly add the mortar mix to the water. Mix the water and mortar until it is creamy but not runny.

Take the flat edge of trowel and spread the mixture over the heating mats for your underfloor heating system. Spread it evenly. Make sure that it covers all of the mat and its wires. Do this carefully so not to damage mats or wires. After you have finished with the mortar you will now need to take your floor tiles and begin to put your first row back down onto the mortar and heating mats.

You will need to let the mortar dry for no less than 24 hours before you mix your grout and place it on your tiles. After you are sure it is dry follow the directions that comes with the tile grout and mix good.

You should use a rubber float for your grout when you apply it in gaps and do this at a 45 degree angle. Make sure you apply evenly between all of the tiles. After all the grout is in place you can take a wet sponge to wipe extra grout away that may be on the tiles.

Once the grout is dry it will be safe to sweep and mop your floor. After all of this is done you should then call a professional electrician so that he can make sure that your new heating system is connected correctly to your main breaker box.
